Convention on Cluster Munitions Entered Into Force August 1
The Convention on Cluster Munitions took effect on Sunday, 1 August 2010, when it became binding international law. The Convention bans the use, production, stockpiling and transfer of cluster munitions and calls for the destruction of stockpiles, clearance of cluster munition-contaminated land, and assistance to cluster munition survivors and affected communities. In dozens of countries including the U.S., campaigners joined UN agencies, governments and international organizations in events that celebrated the swift entry into force of the most significant disarmament and humanitarian treaty in over a decade. President Barack Obama’s administration has initiated a comprehensive review of U.S. landmine policy to determine whether the U.S. will join the Mine Ban Treaty. Senators and Representatives Deliver Letter to Obama Urging U.S. to Join Mine Ban Treaty
Sixty-eight Senators signed a letter to President Obama on May 18 asking the administration to accede to the Mine Ban Treaty. The 68 Senators, including ten Republicans and two Independents, constitute more than the two-thirds of the Senate that would be needed to ratify the treaty if the administration submits the treaty to the Senate for consent. Sen. Patrick Leahy (VT-D) and Sen. George Voinovich (OH-R) circulated the Senate letter, and a similar letter in support of the Senate initiative was circulated by Rep. James McGovern (MA-D) and Rep. Darrell Issa (CA-R) in the House. Read the letters!
